Today the better half and I went out to add to our list yet another Marvel Comics superhero flick. Specifically, as if the title of this post weren't enough to tell you, that movie was the newly released Thor. Anyone who knows even a smattering of Norse mythology knows who Thor is, but for those few who don't, allow me to explain:
Thor, son of the Norse chief god Odin, is his eldest son as well as heir to Odin's throne. He is also the Norse god of thunder, and he carries around a wicked looking hammer that only one who is worthy may lift, which also happens to be the source of his power.Using this hammer, he is able to defend the realm of Asgard from its enemies, most notably the Frost Giants of Jotunheim.
Now that's out of the way, to the film.
I never really read the actual comic books concerning this particular character until recently, but from what I have read, Marvel and the motion picture companies did a good job of putting the character on the silver screen, along with his supporting cast of friends and foes. The makers of the film also did a decent job of depicting Thor's friends in Asgard (Sif, the warrior woman, Volstaag the gluttonous blowhard, and even Odin himself, have all been accurately captured on screen. The special effects are heavy due to the fact that basically half the film takes place in Asgard itself, but then when the movie you're watching is about a group of warrior gods fighting frost giants, you kind of expect that sort of thing.
Final verdict? Awesome. There was fighting, humor, action, and laughs. Everything I've come to expect from a Marvel comic book movie. Go and see it if you're looking to add to your collection. Very enjoyable.
